Fort Wilderness Fun

Fort Wilderness Resort is the older brother to the Wilderness Lodge. It was there when Disney World opened; it was a product of Walt Disney's own imagination.

Fort Wilderness is huge and sprawling, and offers its own mini-culture as a result. Guests can rent golf carts to get around the property, and there is a huge system of bus transportation within Fort Wilderness itself to shuttle guests between the front (check-in) and back (dining, boat dock, general store, etc.) of the resort.

And because of Fort Wilderness' size and tenure at Disney World, they've incorporated dozens of fun and interesting activties into their daily agenda:

Carriage Rides: Private carriage rides cost $45.00 and take guests throughout Fort Wilderness and the adjacent trails. Call 407-wdw-play to book. Starts at 5:30 PM and are every 1/2 hour

Wagon Rides (Like a hayride): 45 minute rides depart from the back of Fort Wilderness from 7pm and 9:30pm. Adults are $8, kids are $5. Children under 3 are free.

Campfire Sing-a-Long and Movie with Chip and Dale: This is one of the only places in Disney World where you'll get interaction with characters without buying a meal or a park ticket. That's right--this is absolutely free! Take the yellow internal bus line to the "Settlement," and ask the driver to drop you off at the campfire (it is near the Meadows Trading Post area). The sing-a-long usually begins around 7, with marshmallow roasting (bring your own or buy a smores kit at the campfire snack bar for $5) and a movie following.

Archery: Every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday at 2:45pm guides lead wannabe archers through the basics of archery, followed by some target practice. Call 407-wdw-play for reservations.

Segway Tour: The Wilderness Back Trail Adventure gives guests the chance to try their hand at a Segway and explore Fort Wilderness at the same time. Call 407-wdw-tour for more information.

Mickey's Backyard BBQ: Mickey, Minnie, and their friends picnic, dance, and have a general good time with you at the BBQ Pavilion! This is at the back of Fort Wilderness, next to the Boat Dock. It occurse on Thursdays and Saturdays from March through December, and can be booked through Disney Dining at 407-wdw-dine up to 90 days in advance. There is a fee for cancellations.

Hoop Dee Doo Revue: This is usually folks' first experience with Fort Wilderness, and it's a great one! It's a dinner show, serving all you can eat barbeque with the fixin's. Showtimes are 5pm, 7:15pm, and 9:30pm. Book up to 90 days ahead (we suggest you book early!) by calling 407-wdw-dine.

Horseback Riding: For $46, you can take a guided ride on horse back from the Tri-Circle-D Ranch through the Sherwood Forest of Fort Wilderness. Riders must be 9 years old, at least 48 inches in height, and weigh less than 250 lbs. Book up to 90 days ahead by calling 407-wdw-play. This isn't for anyone who's a whiz on horseback--but perfect for us newbies! Ride Times: 8:30 am 10:00 am 11:30 am 1:00 pm and 2:30 pm

You can book any of these by calling 407-wdw-play. You do need to book in advance - if you wait to do it the day of you have to actually go to Ft. Wilderness to book.

Rock 'n' Roller Coaster

Rock 'n' Roller Coaster Starring Aerosmith, a high-speed roller coaster for big kids, teens and adults, is amplified by the driving beat of a soundtrack recorded by the rock group Aerosmith specifically for this attraction. With the force of a supersonic F-14, accelerate from a stand-still stop to high speeds—then swoop into 3 inversions and discover a new twist on viewing Los Angeles: upside-down! Step into the G-Force Record studio where you see the 5 members of Aerosmith wrapping up a practice session before their big concert on the other side of town. The show starts soon, the band's late and their manager is trying to get them on the road. You're invited to come along. But how's everyone going to get to the big bash? The solution: a super-stretch limousine that races across 3,400-feet of roller coaster tracks past Southern California landmarks and slices through the toughest of traffic on the LA freeways. Each "car" is furnished with a 125 speaker, 24 sub-woofer, 32,000 watt, onboard audio system—built to blast. Careen through the neon-filled streets of Tinseltown, the rock 'n' roll adrenaline pumping through your veins, your body feeling the force from launch to loop at zero to 60 miles per hour in 2.8 seconds. This is one limo ride you'll always remember! But beware -- 11 of the 18 holes boast water, and 97 bunkers dot the landscape and guard the medium-to-large, undulating greens. More than 1,500 magnolia trees dot this course designed for big hitters. As the setting for the final round of a PGA TOUR® event, this beautifully manicured course has all the earmarks of a golfer's paradise. The par-3 sixth hole even pays tribute to Mickey Mouse with a bunker shaped to form his silhouette.

Power your way down the fairways at this home to the final rounds of the PGA TOUR's Children's Miracle Network Classic. Elevated tees, spacious greens, rolling terrain and tranquil water hazards on 10 of the 18 holes immerse you in a natural setting fit for a fulfilling round of championship golf.

Disney's Osprey Ridge Golf Course

Tom Fazio designed Disney's Osprey Ridge Golf Course to be in unity with the environment, but this trek through nature is no walk in the park. The course rolls through stands of majestic oaks and pines, while large bunkers, glistening lakes and rolling greens deliver all the excitement, magic and fun you can handle. This walk on the wild side provides a Disney golf experience like no other. A beautiful tropical wilderness creates a serene atmosphere, but with a uniquely styled course that challenges the player from the moment they step onto the first tee by offering dramatically elevated tees and greens, nine water holes, and more than 70 strategically placed bunkers.

Course Information: 4 out of 5 stars, as rated by Golf Digest. Tom Fazio, who in 1989 was voted "Golf Course News" "Architect of the Year," has designed a course that is totally unique to this area. This links-style course is designed by mounds and ridges framing the large greens and rolling fairways. The course plays 6,680 yards from the middle tees and winds its way through a tropical wilderness!

Disney's Lake Buena Vista Golf Course

Styled in a classic country club setting, Disney’s Lake Buena Vista Golf Course meanders through dense pine forests. Characterized by small, slightly elevated, well-bunkered greens, the course demands accurate shot-making. Add an island green on the 7th, and it all adds up to a great golfing experience.
